Solo Dance: Interprative

For this dance I based it on physical expressionism. I looked at a performer who I follow who employs the technique of gesturing movements that express the lyrics of the backing track. This was what I was confident in as it requires physical theatre and I found myself really enjoying the dance

Identification - I am center stage

Comment - After some initial confidence issues I found myself really confident with my performance, the dance was well received and the feedback was good. This is definately an aspect of dance that I am much more confident in.

Areas of improvement -Think about movements. Try not to make them too complex. Look to make them as quick and sharp as possible to stay in time with pace of the song.

Crazy little thing called love

For this dance I was playing the role of a 'Bohemian' this meant that I would be required to show a dance with energy and excitement, not nearly as robotic as the GaGa kids.

Identification - I am center stage

Comment - This dance went really well as the song has so much energy, the movement was almost perfect and everyone really contributed to the piece. I forgot about the audience and just put as much as I could into the dance.

Areas of improvement - Perhaps use more of the space available and when freestyling try to use more emphatic movements. Really reflect the characterisation through the dance.

Radio GaGa

For this dance I was playing the role of a 'GaGa kid' this meant that I would be required to  move in time with the others and move from one stage across to another.

Radio GaGa (refer to DVD)

Identification - I am stage right on both stages

Comment - The staging was really well put together. We were higher than the audience which meant that it gave the dance more emphasis, and the changing of stage halfway through meant that we could travel and use more of the studio to our advantage. Which would look more impressive to the audience.

Areas of improvement - Enjoy the dance more. Get involved with the singing side and stop thinking about the next movement and confusing myself. Just let it flow naturally

Grease Dance

For my Dance I had to perform as my character 'Eugene' at the high school dance.
I had to base my movements on my characterisation and therefore needed to influence my Dance to reflect this.

HAND JIVE (Refer to DVD)
Identification - I am on stage right from the Audience's view

Comment: Lighting and backing music worked to really bring energy to the dance, the fact that my character is unsure of himself and personifies as 'uncool' meant that he was uncomfortable with the steps. This was beneficial to me as it meant that If I made any mistakes in the dance then I could make it look like I was doing this deliberately whilst in character.
Areas of improvement - Try to concentrate on timing and be aware of others around you. Occasionally Im bumping into people.

Radio GaGa

Today we revisted the Radio gaga dance with the year 12's whilst also working on production roles. I will be taking part as a Gaga kid in the other production so it is vital I learn it. After taking part several times I opted to also record the dance in order to help me rehearse in my free time:

After this I met with Amy to discuss the progress of the Programme, we arranged that the final page would present the collage of various rehearsal photos to show the work that led to the production. It would be my responsibilty to photograph the rehearsals and merge the selected photos into a page. I met with Rachel and she confirmed that their would be funding available for colour printing. Which primarily is our target as we feel black and white takes away the elegance. She did clarify that this meant we would have to sell the programmes rather than just give them out, as colour printing would cost more.

Dance

In today's session we tackled the dance for radio GaGa with Sam. We had a look at the opening dance from the stage show for inspiration and another from a school production, these are credited below.

We began with a stretch and warm up. Sam then began with a short isolation routine which gave us a vivid into the Radio gaga style of dance, it consisted of sharp movementsand swift turns with a robotic effect. We developed corner routines in the form of contemporary dance. I struggled with this as my timing and footwork were really poor and I found the change in direction hard to follow. I hope to improve my dance by the end of the course to a point where I feel confident with what im doing.

We were then split into groups of 4 and assigned with choreographing a verse of the song. My group was given verse 2:

'No need to think, no need to feel,
When only cyberspace is real,
It makes us laugh, it makes us cry,
It makes us feel like we can fly,
We can fly.'

We chose to stick with choreography similar to the videos above. Especially similar to the west end production. It was difficult to establish and was far from compact, each move was like a seperate sequence and had it's own specification. I found myself trying to predict the next movement in my head so I could give a good delivery, much like an Actor thinking his next line or a singer preparing for a change in key. I think the struggle was a good learning experience and I am keen to see how I progress with the dance...
